Officer Safety and Wellness Group Meeting Summary: Promoting Positive Coping Strategies in Law Enforcement—Emerging Issues and Recommendations
In July 2019, the OSW Group continued and expanded on previous discussions of methods of supporting emotional health and organizational wellness; this meeting focused particularly on alcoholism, substance abuse, and other antisocial coping strategies officers might use to help them deal with the mundane day-to-day stressors of the job that can accumulate and take their toll even in the absence of acute critical incidents. It is necessary to identify and understand the ways in which officers may struggle to manage the stress of the job in order to develop programs and services that can provide them with the skills, tools, and positive coping strategies that will enable them to build their own resilience and not merely survive but flourish.
