 | De-escalation training has emerged as a promising strategy for reducing use of force incidents and injuries to officers. However, wide variation in training programs across the country has left agencies without clear guidance for what constitutes effective practice. To address this gap, the COPS Office, in collaboration with the National Policing Institute undertook a comprehensive review of research, best practices, and field perspectives to develop the National Standards for Law Enforcement De-Escalation Training, as directed by the Law Enforcement De-escalation Training Act of 2022 (LEDTA). The resulting 14 National Standards – extensively reviewed and vetted by internal federal agency representatives and external stakeholders – establish guidance for the development, delivery, and content of practitioner training.
